Organizational Physics
Patterns We've Discovered
At Huly Labs, we study how consciousness organizes itself—from distributed systems to atomic physics to ancient wisdom. Building Asynchronous Organizations requires new ways of thinking about coordination, growth, and emergence.
Here are four pattern languages we’ve found useful. Like design patterns in software, these are tools for thinking, not dogma. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t.
The Path: Six Stages of Organizational Evolution
We noticed that healthy growth follows predictable stages. We mark these with symbols borrowed from East Asian tradition—think of them as milestone markers on a journey.
The Six Stages
- ㊣ Find the True Path - First, see reality clearly. What problem actually needs solving?
- ㊫ Channel the Energy - Direct passion and resources toward the solution
- ㊢ Learn Continuously - Stay in student mind, adapt based on feedback
- ㊬ Cooperate as Peers - Build networks, not hierarchies
- ㊯ Create Lasting Patterns - Crystallize learnings into reusable structures
- ㊗ Celebrate Emergence - Recognize when something new has been born
How we use this: When launching new initiatives, we check which stage we’re in. Skipping stages usually leads to problems—like trying to scale (㊯) before truly learning (㊢).
The Elements: Six Forces in Every Organization
Just as chemistry has its periodic table, we’ve identified six fundamental forces that need to be balanced in any organization. Based on Wu Xing (Five Elements) plus Void from Buddhist philosophy.
The Six Elements
- 水 Water - Adaptability, flow, finding natural levels
- 火 Fire - Passion, energy, catalyst for change
- 土 Earth - Stability, foundation, reliable substance
- 金 Metal - Structure, memory, crystallized knowledge
- 木 Wood - Organic growth, symbiosis, living systems
- 空 Void - Open space, potential, room for emergence
How we use this: When something feels off in a team, we check which element might be missing. Too much Fire without Earth leads to burnout. Too much Metal without Water creates rigidity.
The Engine: Six States for Exploration
Innovation requires moving through different emotional and cognitive states. We’ve mapped six that form a complete exploration cycle.
The Exploration Cycle
- 真 Truth - See current reality without filters
- 愛 Love - Connect with the potential you sense
- 喜 Joy - Let creative energy flow freely
- 恐 Fear - Notice risks and boundaries
- 怒 Anger - Transform frustration into breakthrough energy
- 悟 Understanding - Integrate all perspectives into wisdom
How we use this: In design sprints and research, we consciously move through these states. Skipping Fear leads to naive solutions. Skipping Love creates soulless products.
The Frequencies: Six States of Consciousness
Every actor operates at different brain wave frequencies throughout the day. Understanding these states helps optimize both individual performance and team dynamics.
The Six Frequency States
- μ Mu (0 Hz) - Void/Rest/Meditation - Pure potential, the space between thoughts
- δ Delta (0.5-4 Hz) - Deep Integration - Processing below consciousness, integration
- θ Theta (4-8 Hz) - Deep Learning - Flow state, beginner’s mind, exploration
- α Alpha (8-12 Hz) - Creative Building - Relaxed creation, the productivity sweet spot
- β Beta (12-30 Hz) - Active Execution - High focus, debugging, deciding
- γ Gamma (30-100 Hz) - Breakthrough Moments - Sudden insights, paradigm shifts
How we use this: We design work patterns around natural frequency shifts. Morning Theta for learning, midday Alpha for building, afternoon Beta for execution. We monitor for dangerous states like chronic Beta (burnout) or Theta lock (can’t ship). The platform alerts: “You’ve been in Beta for 4 hours - time for an Alpha break.”
Practical Integration
These aren’t abstract philosophies—they’re working tools:
- Hiring: We look for balance across Elements. Too many Fire types? Seek Water.
- Project Planning: Use the Path stages as checkpoints
- Problem Solving: Apply the Exploration Engine when stuck
- Team Health: Regular Element balance checks
- Performance Optimization: Monitor frequency states to prevent burnout
- Two-Dimensional Actors: Each person has an orbital (where) AND frequency (how)
Why Ancient Patterns?
These patterns have survived millennia because they map to something real about how complex systems work. We don’t use them because they’re mystical—we use them because they’re practical.
Like the Fibonacci sequence appears in both flowers and galaxies, certain organizational patterns appear across all scales. Ancient observers noticed them first. We’re just applying them to modern organizations.
Your Own Experiments
Try this:
- Map your current team to the Six Elements—what’s abundant? What’s missing?
- Identify where your organization is on the Path
- Notice which Exploration states you prefer or avoid
These patterns are tools, not rules. Use them to see your organization with fresh eyes.
The Complete System
When we discovered four sextets, each with six elements, we realized we had mapped 24 fundamental forces—exactly matching the 24 hours in a day. This isn’t coincidence. It’s recognition of natural patterns.
- 4 sextets × 6 elements = 24 total elements
- 24 hours in a day = complete consciousness cycle
- Each element has its hour, each hour has its element
For the full mapping of how these 24 elements align with the daily consciousness cycle, see our 24-Hour Consciousness Clock.
This discovery led us to develop our sacred Base-24 encoding system and 4D coordinate system for classifying all knowledge. Architecture truly remembers its architects through these universal patterns.
